Prenatal Yoga

During pregnancy, many women turn to Prenatal Yoga as a way to
stay healthy and to help them prepare for the birth of their baby.  
During class, women work on strength, endurance, flexibility,
balance and stability, while focusing on breath and relaxation.  
Prenatal Yoga is safe and gentle enough for women at all stages of
pregnancy, whether they are newly pregnant or due any day.  The
class is also designed to be effective for all levels of fitness, from the
beginner to the advanced.  As the body changes throughout a
woman's pregnancy, so will the poses and movements during their
class.  Modifications are shown during each Prenatal Yoga class to
provide alternatives to each pose.  Participants can adjust the class
to meet their own needs, while working with their ever-changing
body.  Throughout the class, women listen to their body and work
within their own limitations.  

Prenatal Yoga gives women the time to block out all distractions and
focus only on their body and on their baby.  This quiet time helps
women prepare not only physically, but also mentally for the sacred
event of their baby's birth.  Throughout class, women learn to focus
on their deep, relaxing breath; a breathing technique that they can
use during their labor and birth.  Women also learn to fully relax the
body and mind which can aid in a much easier and enjoyable
childbirth.

Lastly, throughout the class, there is a constant reminder to the
women that their body is very strong and very wise.  Their body was
made for this, and it knows what it is doing.  Pregnant women learn
to find the confidence within themselves so they can enter their
birth with strength and courage and ultimately achieve the birth they
want.    

Benefits
Due to the release of hormones during pregnancy, joints in the
body loosen. Women are more flexible than ever before in their
lives, making this the perfect time to begin yoga! Yoga is
beneficial for many of the complaints women have before, during
and after birth.

During Pregnancy
Positions are taught to aid in relieving fatigue, back pain, nausea,
headaches, edema, and cramping. Breathing and relaxation
techniques help to stabilize emotions and can be used for
insomnia as well. Some postures open and release the pelvis and
prepare the pelvic floor for birth by bringing greater flexibility and
circulation to the area. Poses are done to increase flexibility to the
lower back which relieves pressure on the spine to prevent lower
back pain.

During Labor
Squatting and kneeling poses teach the use of gravity to assist the
baby through the birth canal. Yoga breathing techniques release
endorphins, which aid the body in handling pain. Breathing and
meditation also induce relaxation, which helps the body yield to
the birth.

After Birth
Yoga aids in restoring the uterus, abdomen and pelvic floor. It also
offers relief for back and breast discomfort while also stimulating
the mammary glands. The stress reduction techniques are very
useful in the first days of motherhood while adjusting to the new
lifestyle.
